Betting For Information
or the Backward Steal Raise
POKER TIP OF THE DAY:
Raise to find out what hands other players have
Here's a play worth trying if you're the first person to take action in a hand, especially if you're in the mood for a bluff. Your first action is to raise, causing all the other players to call two bets at once. The effect is usually to reduce the number of players and so limit your opposition.
It's really a backward steal raise if you think about it. Experience shows that in a high percentage of games, a majority of players will fold to this action. Be warned however, those players who remain will either be psychos or worse: have a good hand! The move is basically known as betting for information, and works best within a small group of players.
