STARTING OUT IN POKER! Okay, you’re starting a New Year and we’re going to assume a lot of you are starting online poker for the first time. Here’s what to do. Go to dailystarpoker.com and take a FREE tutorial on Texas Hold’em to learn the finer points of the world’s most rewarding card game. When you’ve immersed yourself in the rules of the game, begin by playing the “play money” games to get a feel for what’s involved. You need to download the simple software and get used to how it functions. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to play. When you are comfortable with your playing style, make the jump to real cash games but be aware that the tactics applied in the latter are less likely to be as manic as when only “play money” is involved. Play low limit games until you begin to sense the rather obvious tactical differences. There’s much less wild bluffing and power betting because this time players’ real wallets are at stake.
The excitement level kicks right up with real cash games and you’ll start to get the rush that goes with it. Remember at all times the importance of position. Position is power. If you are the last person to act as the betting goes clockwise around from the dealer you have the tactical benefit of seeing what every other player does before you have to act. Always try to exact value from late position.
HAND RANKINGS
When you’re starting out keep this hand rankings list with you so you know exactly how powerful your hands are as they develop. Lowest hand would be an ace high followed by one pair, two pair, three of a kind (trips), straight (a five card sequence 4-5-6-7-8), flush (five cards all of the same suit), full house (three of a kind plus a pair), four of a kind, straight flush (five cards in sequence of the same suit) and the all time top of the heap: Royal Flush (ten jack queen king ace of the same suit).
